Connectedness to Nature Scale: Adult
(Mayer & McPherson Frantz, 2004 )
The Connectedness to Nature Scale (CNS) measures to what degree people feel part of nature. The study by Mayer & McPherson shows that this is a personality trait. This trait is predictive of responsible environmental behavior and subjective wellbeing. The scale is utilized by Dr. Elizabeth Warson, founder of Healing Pathways and faculty with the Expressive Arts Trauma Informed Institute, to gather data. A pre-test is done at the beginning of services or retreat experiences. This establishes a baseline. Periodically throughout services or at the end of a retreat experience, a post-test is completed to see if a person's connection to nature changes as a result of the experiences. Thus far, data supports that nature-based expressive arts therapy and equine-assisted expressive arts therapy result in increased scores.
